What is the IEC?
The Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) at KBIHER is constituted to safeguard the dignity, rights, safety, and well-being of all actual and potential participants in research activities conducted at or affiliated with the institution. The IEC operates in accordance with Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) national ethical guidelines for biomedical and health research involving human participants.
The committee provides independent, competent, and timely review of the ethical aspects of a proposed study and acts as a gatekeeper to protect participants from potential harm, while facilitating ethically sound research that contributes to the advancement of healthcare knowledge.
Mandate & Terms of Reference
Review all research proposals involving human participants or data before the research commences.
Evaluate proposals for scientific validity, ethical appropriateness, and participant safety.
Ensure proper informed consent procedures are in place for all studies.
Monitor ongoing research for continuing compliance with ethical standards.
Review and act upon safety reports, protocol amendments, and deviations.
Maintain records of all applications, decisions, and correspondence.
Categories of Ethical Review
Exempt Review
Research involving minimal or no risk to participants, such as anonymous surveys, publicly available data analysis, or standard educational practices.
Expedited Review
Research involving no more than minimal risk that does not qualify for exemption — typically reviewed by the Chair or a designated subcommittee.
Full Board Review
Research involving more than minimal risk to participants, or studies involving vulnerable populations, requiring review by the full committee at a convened meeting.

Submit a Research Proposal
Researchers wishing to submit proposals for ethical review should contact the IEC Coordinator with a completed application form and study protocol.
